Please use the following introduction when performing:

Student 1: "Around the world, two things have the power to bring people together — music and food. And what better place to celebrate both than at a barbecue! When Garth Prince moved to Canada from Namibia, he quickly discovered that Canadians love barbecues just as much as Namibians — though here’s the real question: who here likes to barbecue even in the winter?"

Student 2: "Garth and his friend, Mr. Forth, decided to cook up something musically tasty and The Barbecue Song' became one of Garth’s first big cultural hits in Canada. These days, Mr. Forth is a choir and band teacher at Harry Ainley High School, and he and Garth are still creating fresh new tunes for students and audiences everywhere to enjoy!"

The Barbecue Song
Lyrics by Garth Prince and Joel Forth

Yes, ya! Its barbecue time!

Oh weh oh weh oh / woah oh ohohoh /
Oh weh oh weh oh / woah oh ohohoh oh_______ / woah oh ohohoh oh___________

Throw it on the fire /
can’t wait to see the flames light up the night /

and smell the sweetness swimming through the air /
You know that there is more than enough to share for / Supper! / Supper!

And then we spread the word /
the message goes until everyone has heard /

As simply as we gather here to eat /
 good feelings flow like
water through the street /

Chorus: Hey! Mamma Pappa sister wena* / Africa America /
Mothers and children gather round for this tradition / Yes!
Dumela* jambo* Soweto* / Oshakati* chesta*
Around the fire we are one / brothers and sisters / Yes!

Guitar riff

Oh weh oh weh oh / woah oh ohohoh /
Oh weh oh weh oh / woah oh ohohoh oh

And then it’s story time /
I’m singing with a glass / is this
lemon or lime /

These spices tell the tales of my youth /
and I will always honor and salute* /
Salute!
