Give back my culture. Give back my land.
Give back my language so I can understand.

Two million years ago this land was unencumbered. This cradle nurtured the birth of humankind. This is the legacy that will stretch into the future. This is the labour by which we are defined.

Chorus: Give me back my culture. Give me back my land. Give me back my language. So I can understand. Give back my culture. Give back my land. Give back my language so I can understand.

Five hundred years ago this land was overcome. Guns of emperors echoed uncontrolled. And through these trials, my people were divided. We cannot stand until our story is told.

Chorus

Twenty years ago our hearts were liberated. By men who rose above the empires of old. We must not let Mandela’s struggle be for nothing. We must move forward to the valley of gold.

Chorus

TEACHER NOTES:

The song was inspired by experience growing up under the apartheid system of South Africa. When I was eight years old, Namibia became independent and apartheid was abolished. However, the transition was filled with challenges when black students were allowed to attend coloured (brown) and white schools.

I am a passionate speaker on the topic of diverse and equality. Feel free to ask more about my experiences in this regard.

Below is an audio version of the song and an instrumental track. Further below are some notes from my talk at the Edmonton Teacher's Convention in February, 2023.
